Display and control interface for your audio project

CONTROLLER-02 brings display output and user input together in one I2C-connected module. Use it as the front-panel interface of a DIY preamplifier or another audio project. Your main controller supplies the screen content and decides how each user action affects the system.

Firmware features

• Flexible text display: write text and LCD commands over I2C to show source names, settings, menu items and system status on the four-line display.
• Rotary encoder navigation: rotation in either direction produces separate up/down events. Pressing the encoder produces a selection event, allowing your main controller to implement menus and adjustments.
• RC5 remote-control interface: recognised up, down, select and power commands are translated into control events for the main controller. The updated firmware checks the configured RC5 address and command for each function.
• Buffered input: a 64-byte event queue holds encoder and recognised IR events until the main controller reads them over I2C. An empty queue returns 0.
• Display on/off control: dedicated I2C commands clear and switch the display, with a gradual fade of the background illumination.
• Adjustable illumination: 10-bit PWM provides an adjustable backlight level of approximately 10% to full brightness. The illumination can also be switched off separately.
• Configurable control mapping: the updated firmware accepts encoder response codes and RC5 address/command settings over I2C. Settings are held in RAM and should be reapplied by the main controller after a restart.

Integration

The module handles display communication and control events; menus, volume control, source switching and system power actions are implemented by your main controller. Encoder and IR receiver boards are external accessories. Poll the event queue regularly and check the firmware version installed on your module when using configurable mappings.
